Sarah Sutton‘s work explores the resonance between external and internal landscapes, the states in which we find ourselves. She investigates the use of material to represent the immaterial. She is interested in the polarization of states of mind and place, and the question of where we locate qualities of experience – explored in the polarity series, and the dispossession landscapes. Some of her paintings respond to states of mind evoked by other writers & artists, like in search of stillness for agnes martin.
She mainly works in oils on canvas, linen, metal or board, with elements of ash and grit, using the resonance of their provenance & associations, layering, scraping and dissolving the paint, in an effort to distil some essence of a state of mind and place, with all its conflicting undercurrents and attempts at resolution.
