polarity

The question of polarity is central to Sarah Sutton’s practice. Her paintings seek a provisional resolution of opposing states of mind, horizontality and verticality, disturbance and serenity, temporality and timelessness. She is fascinated by the use of material to represent the immaterial. In painting this series, part of landscapes of the interior, she had in mind the question of what we locate where: states of mind we see as belonging to another place, another person, another time.
